Nike Missile Site: D Battery

This used to be an army communications facility for a Nike missile site. It was built during the cuban missile crisis in the mid 60's and decomissioned in 1979. These sites were generally split into two locations. One was the larger launch facility, with the actual missile silo's, and the communications facility, which I is where they did targeting and fire control. They're usually separated by about a mile. Unfortunately the launch facility at this site was turned into a detention center for illegal immigrants quite a while ago. I'm not sure if anything remains of the original site there, but I intend on trying to get in with permission, although it seems unlikely as its still very active.

They try to keep people out of the facility and have barricaded the entrance so cars cant enter, and they very recently put up brand new barbed wire fence and US Government Property warning signs, but there is no change to the inside, and we've already found an opening to the place without having to jump the fence.

We have visited this site on numerous occasions, both during the daytime and at night. The only area left to be explored are some of the areas surrounding the buildings to the rear where there are some mountings for anti-aircraft missiles. It's a decent sized facility and the road near it is pretty busy. One of the downsides is that on weekends some people play paintball there and it generally takes away from the place, there is also a massive amount of graffiti.

The only time we have run into other people there, we got a good scare. We were pulling into the driveway of the place off the main highway when we see a guy in full camo gear holding a HUGE machine gun. Needless to say, we quickly pulled out and took off. After freaking out for a few minutes and wondering if the military is re-commissioning the site, we decided to drive by again to get a better look. When we came back, there was nobody to be seen anywhere, and no vehicles, so we decided to pull in very very slowly, so as not to scare any machine gun carrying visitors. Well, as we are driving in, the same guy comes out, this time wearing a white t-shirt and without his machine gun. He came out to greet us, and it turned out that it was actually some military personnel (two guys) who were on vacation and camping out in the woods. They decided to stop and make camp there. They were pretty cool, they actually showed us an easy way to get on the roof and some other stuff we didn't know about the place.
